Abstract
Provided a true calibration curve based on many high precision <sup>14</sup>C analyses of tree rings is known, the calibration to be used depends on the time width of the <sup>14</sup>C sample, i.e., the time-range represented by the actual sample. For samples covering large numbers of years, for instance peat, the calibration curve has to be smoothed to the appropriate degree.
