Several central European tree-ring calendars have been reconstructed that extend back to prehistoric times. These series were mainly derived from oak wood, because oak timber has commonly been preferred by man for settlement constructions since Neolithic times, and therefore have been available in large quantities from excavations of prehistoric sites as well as from medieval to modern framework-houses and other objects.
