Mexico is located at a place where tectonic plates meet, exposing the land to seismic and volcanic events. The country also lies in the path of tropical storms that become hurricanes as they approach its coasts on both oceans. The recurrence of catastrophic events has led us to turn to different government agencies for action in risk prevention and in providing assistance to communities in order to save their lives and property, in addition to preserving the architectural and urban landmarks linked to memory and identity. Mexicans have always lived with earthquakes, volcanic eruption, floods and hurricanes. However, scientific understanding of these events and the resources for reducing the impact on architectural heritage are recent phenomena.
