Materials from objects found in a Roman sarcophagus (late 3rd century) excavated at Rheinbach Flerzheim (Rhein-Siegkreis), were analyzed by R. Rottländer (Univ. Tübingen). Thin-layer chromatography indicated that the parts of an Attis gagate statuette were glued with birch bark pitch. Gas chromatography of the methyl esters from the fat in a closed glass bottle yields a pattern of fatty acids characteristic of degraded olive oil. The black organic plug of the bottle could not be identified with certainty by Thin-layer chromatography; fluorescence and electron microscopy showed remains of fiber plant cells. -- AATA
