Abstract
Warp breaking of silk fabrics made in the Edo period was assessed by measuring the breaking strength. The phenomenon of warp breaking can be explained as follows: the diameter of the warp is smaller than that of the weft. Since raw silk was used in the warp of the fabrics, the warp would have deteriorated more rapidly than the weft made of degummed silk.
