Abstract
The National Park Service was established in 1916 with a mandate to preserve the natural and historic objects in its custody. Until the end of World War II it practiced state-of-the-art conservation as then understood. It hired its first professionally trained conservator in 1950 and since then has gradually increased its specialist staff and facilities while maintaining constructive contact with the growing professional field.
