Abstract
Mortar samples from two locations in Belgium were physically and chemically analyzed and dated by radiocarbon. The results show that the <sup>14</sup>C date of the mortars is influenced by the geological and environmental history of the mortar. A good understanding of these phenomena, combined with physical and chemical analyses, allow a better choice of datable mortars.
