¹⁴C dates may be of little or no value if great care is not taken during sampling, sorting, and pretreatment of charcoal from archaeological sites. Dating errors associated with long-lived or ancient, preserved wood can be avoided by using relatively simple tests and by taking certain elementary precautions during sampling in the field; a useful procedure for sampling charcoal is described.
