In the format of a textbook, this publication was written for first-level course work to answer the restoration students' questions of how and with what. The first chapter identifies the tools used in restoration work. Each of the remaining 34 chapters describes treatments for a specific material, i.e., textiles, paper, paintings, leather, ceramic, glass, etc. No scientific analytical methods are described but there is a section on photography and x-radiography. Practical information is provided such as the sharpening of tools, the making of molds, the use of natural and synthetic glues, as well as directions for techniques such as woodturning. Explanationswhy particular procedures are used and general questions on criteria for the conservation of cultural property are expected to be covered by supplementary sources. -- AATA
