Residual stress in a solventless, amine-cured epoxy coating was measured and found to increase with coating thickness. This was probably due to competition between densification produced during the curing reaction and swelling by absorbed atmospheric moisture, which is prevalent in thinner coatings. The exothermic curing reaction was found to have no influence upon the internal stress nor upon the curing rate of the coating because it does not produce a measurable temperature increase. -- AATA
