If the specular gloss of a sample is remeasured after a period of months or years and is found to have changed, this may be due to changes in the instrument, in the sample, or in the reference standard. The two latter causes are investigated and results of measurements over many years are reported. To overcome instabilities of the black glass reference standard, a new type of reference standard is suggested. -- AATA
