Abstract
The University of Toronto, in collaboration with the University of Rochester (New York) and General Ionex Corporation (Massachusetts), has developed an ultrasensitive mass spectrometer using the Nuclear Structure Research Laboratory accelerator at the University of Rochester. It was demonstrated that this mass spectrometer could be used as an efficient and sensitive radiocarbon dating facility, using sample sizes of only 1 milligram or less and counting times of minutes to a few hours. The current dating limit achieved is 60,000 BP. Several samples have been run as a test of the applicability of the method including wood samples ranging from 100 to 43,000 years BP as well as samples of archaeological interest (linen mummy wraps, muscle of a baby mammoth, iron slag).
