A three-stage sampling strategy for a Saxon settlement site is described. Total extent of the site was not known, and stripping large areas would have been financially prohibitive. The stages comprised: 1) judgement holes to ascertain if and where to sample; 2) stratified random sampling using 8 meter quadrats; 3) extension of certain quadrats to recover structural information. Various problems in implementing the scheme are described. -- AATA
