This article deals with the famous site of Ampurias. The first systematic excavations took place between 1846-1848. In 1931 the ruins were declared a historic and artistic monument as were the museum buildings in 1962. The monument is at present managed by a Board of Trustees. The museum is a multi-purpose institution with activities embracing archaeological research and museum display; it is equipped with facilities and resources for these purposes. Basic problems include restoration, conservation, storage and exhibition of archaeological objects. The extrinsic problems are mass tourism, the unrestricted spread of new buildings, and the damage to archaeological remains and their ecological setting. Various methods have been adopted to solve these problems. -- AATA
