Abstract
We report on the moisture absorption and antifungal properties on the pigments which are largely used in egg Tempera. Moisture absorption of the pigments was tested by placing about 2g. of pigment powder at the various relative humidities and by weighing it. Cerulian Blue, Mineral Violet and Ivory Black absorbed mush moisture. Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Vermilion Zinc White, Oxide of Chromium and Manganese Blue absorbed little moisture. For antifungal property, the pigments were kneaded with a little water by the mixer and were tested in the following way. Fungal test 1: The pigments were plated with the potato dextrose agar. The test fungi, Pullularia pullulans IAM F24, Tricoderma T-1 ATCC 9645, Fusarium moniliforme USDA 1004.1, isolated fungi 8-9, 7-1 and G-4, were inoculated on the plates, and growth of the fungi was examined. Good growth was shown on the plates with synthetic pigments, and poor growth with Cadmium Red Maroon, Cerulian and Viridian. Fungal test 2: The slide glasses coated with the mixture of pigment and vehicle were placed in a desiccator inside of which was regulated at 86per thousandRH. After 14 days, the growth of the test fungi was observed on the slide glasses of Peony Red, Raw Sienna etc. Fungal test 3: The pigment was mixed with vehicle and was coated on a preparation of tempera. After 50 days the growth of the various fungi was observed on the preparation with Cobalt Blue, Peony Red and Mineral Violet. Antifungal property of egg tempera can be estimated by examining moisture absorption and by fungal test 1 and 2 of pigments instead of test 3.
