Abstract
In the course of the study on the preservation of Egg Tempera Pictures, the authors report on the prevention of microbial growth on some pictures. Four pieces of Egg Temperas were used as materials. These pictures are partial copies from the classical paintings: (1) Crucifixion , (2) Madonna of Magnificent , (3) Descent from the Cross , and (4) Primavera , which were damaged by microorganisms. Eleven strains of fungi were isolated from the picture (1) and 18, 8, and 16 strains were isolated from the picture (2), (3), and (4), respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of the antifungal agents, TBZ and IF 1000 for the isolated fungi were examined. No growth of fungi was shown on the potato dextrose agar containing 100 ppm of TBZ or 2.5 ppm of IF 1000. Protection of the pictures against the attacks of fungi was tried: the picture (1) and (2) were coated with 25 ppm of IF 1000, while (3) and (4) were coated with 1000 ppm of TBZ. The treated pictures were stoked at 25°C, RH 65per thousand for 3 weeks, then stocked at 25°, RH 100per thousand for 5 days. No fungal attack was detected on each picture.
