A small group of La Tène I/II painted pottery from Champagne has been examined in thin section, with the scanning electron microscope and by X-ray diffraction in order to determine the production technology. The results have allowed the recognition of a group of vessels so closely related in respect of their typology, fabric, forming and firing technology and decorative techniques that they were probably the products of a single centre - the so-called 'Prunay workshop'. This workshop represented a departure from the established pottery-making traditions of the region and was characterised by the skilful applications of new techniques, including standardisation of pastes, wheel-throwing and 'negative' painting. It marks the beginning of a new and innovative pottery-making tradition.
