Abstract
The article reviews the influence of pigmentation on mechanical properties of paint films. Topics covered include the influence of pigment volume concentration (PVC) on stress-strain curves; effects of PVC on glass transition temperature Tg; quantitative interpretation of reinforcement (including the elastic modulus (Young's modulus) and torsion modulus, changes in the ultimate properties (including development of cracks) and the influence of experimental conditions, ultimate strengths or tensile strengths, and ultimate strains); the Mullins effect; and multiaxial tensions. The magnitude of the effect of the pigment on some properties depends on factors such as particle size, morphology, chemical nature, surface treatment, polymer physical state, and humidity. Discussion of the subject includes both theoretical calculations and experimental data, with 64 references.
