In the last two-thirds of the 20th century, several national and international conferences concerning heritage and its conservation have been held. A series of documents were written as conclusions in a considerable number of these encounters which are known as the Restoration Charters. There is an extensive number of such, but some of them have been testimonies of important accomplishments, and have also served as a guidance for the conservation and restoration of heritage. It is interesting to understand the history of these charters in order to comprehend their circumstances and what they contain. The present paper has focused on the following events: Athens 1931, Rome 1932, The Hague 1954, Venice 1964, Roma 1972, Amsterdam 1975, Rome 1987 and Krakow 2000. Secondly, the evolution of the main concepts of these Charters is analyzed.
