An archaeochemical laboratory should work in close connection with a university, rather than with a museum, thereby keeping abreast of developments and research. It should give aid to prehistorians during excavation and develop new archaeometric techniques. The smaller laboratory should emphasize analysis of inorganic and organic material, e. g. bone, sediment, dyes, and organic residues in vessels. A smaller laboratory should be equipped with an analytical balance, gas chromatograph, facilities for thin-layer chromatography, IR-spectrograph, spectral photometer and the usual means for wet quantitative analysis and titration.
