The floods of Florence in 1966 did damage to more than a thousand paintings (some 300 on panel and 900 on canvas), to thousands upon thousands of square yards of frescoes, hundreds of sculptures, thousands of wood carvings of every kind, weapons, fabrics, tapestries and various other objects. The most moving operation of restoration carried out in the Florence laboratory was the rescue of the famous Crucifixion by Cimabue. A new treatment was developed to rescue The Last Supper by Taddeo Gaddi. It was deteriorating rapidly due to salts and nitrates. Nardo de Cione's Inforno , which measures over 1,000 square feet, was detached in one piece from the Church of Santa Maria. Donatello's famous Magdalene which, repainted in the 19th century, was found to be not only plastered over but with its original spirit distorted. Beneath the successive repaintings, the original fifteenth century polychrome appeared.
