This article gives the history of Japanese lacquer ware and the processes involved in making lacquer objects. The process is extremely complex involving numerous steps. Europeans imported lacquer in the 17th and 18th century extensively, and tried to imitate it. These attempts were unsuccessful in part due to the fact that it required propagation of Japanese lacquer trees in order to produce equivalent lacquer. These trees would not grow in Europe.
