As indicated by the title, this article is third in a series of four. It deals with the biological sources of pigments used in providing several ranges of color tones (mostly yellow, orange, red & brown) for lacquers applied to violins. The first source of pigments are from several species of redwood, Camwood and Narrawood, black walnut, aloe (lily plant family), and henna. The second source is of animal origin, cochineal - a cactus plant louse, kermes - an insect living on oak trees, lacquer - a scaly insect - coccus lacca of India. Each described from the historic perspective, place of origin, method of extraction, ease of solubility in various media and the color tones yielded in various solutions.
