Glazed pottery from the 9th to 12th century excavated at several sites in Siraf, Iran, was examined by neutron activation and x-ray fluorescence analysis. On the basis of siteand stratigraphic provenance, the sherds were divided into groups designated Early and Late Sgraffiato ware (9th-10th, and 11th-12th century, respectively), and Late Green A and Late Green B ware. The Early Sgraffiato matches a reference group from Samarra (northern Mesopotamia) very well. The two Green Ware groups were found to be similar, and basically akin to Mesopotamian clay, yet distinguishable from Samarra ware. Thus these ceramics were not made from local clays. The Late Sgraffiato does not match any of the clay sources identified to date, but Siraf was a great trading port, and it is not surprising to find pottery imported from more than one locality.
