Abstract
In early 1982, some success was achieved at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in the treatment of waterlogged archaeological leather by impregnation with 10% weight aqueous glycerol followed by freeze-drying. The treated leather items were flexible, showed natural color, and minimal shrinkage, and did not attract dust. Additional experiments have since been carried out, investigating factors such as glycerol concentration, impregnation time and initial leather condition which might have some effect on the final condition of the treated leather. The behavior of leather from marine sites and land-sites, and of leather previously treated by other methods is discussed, as are the use of aqueous glycerol solutions in the treatment of other waterlogged archaeological organic materials, namely wood and rope. -- AATA
