Abstract
Two-hundred-fifty seals from three different periods of production were analyzed (mainly the Warring State Period, also Han, Southern and Northern Dynasty, T'ang and Ming Dynasties). The alloys contained copper, tin, and lead in neariy all cases. The results of all analyses are listed, including minor and trace elements, and are compared with results from 97 ceremonial Chinese bronze vessels in the Freer Gallery of Art. Some distinctions among the three production periods for the seals are seen, and the vessel compositions indicate an alloy of higher melting point than that used for the seals. Similarly the alloy used for official seals had a higher melting point, and this and the variable composition of most seals suggest poorer facilities for the production of less important seals. Typical compositions for Chinese bronzes are given. -- AATA
