A six-page table of contents details the structure of this seven-chapter, comprehensive study, surveying the history and production of illuminated books. Numerous illustrations complement each part. Chapter I reviews ancient methods of book illustration (Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Early Hebrew); chapter II is titled Early West Christian Byzantine and Allied Illumination (with extensions into Syriac, Armenian and Coptic production); chapter III studies Hiberno-Saxon, Carolingian, and Ottonian Illumination. The Anglo-Celtic production (Canterbury, Mercian, Winchester schools) is also part of this chapter, as well as that from further East (Prague, Poland, Scandinavia) and West (Iceland). Islamic, Hebrew, and Mozarabic illumination is the subject of chapter IV, which includes Portugal. The remaining chapters study the Golden Age of Illumination first in England, then in Italy, and finally, in France, Burgundy, the Netherlands, and Flanders.
