Alternatives to the use of plaster of paris for supporting and lifting objects on archaeological sites are explored. Scotchcast casting tapes have been used on both wet and dry sites. Expanding foam was used to block-lift large objects for transport, for producing casts of cavities in the ground and also for manufacturing a support for a latex mould. Advantages and disadvantages of both materials are discussed. Diagrams, references.
