The conservation of a large Clazomenaean sarcophagus lid which was hit by a bomb during the Second World War is described. A brief history of the object since its acquisition by the British Museum is followed by an account of its construction method and decoration. The article discusses the conditions and facilities needed to treat an object of this size and the factors governing choice and use of adhesives and additional strengthening devices. The reconstruction process is described in full, from removal of old restoration through cleaning, trial assembly and sticking to filling and final painting.
