Abstract
The stabilization of bronze disease remains a major challenge for the archaeological conservator. The use of sodium carbonate solution as a pre-treatment in conjunction with benzotriazole gives the conservator another option when a bronze does not stabilize in benzotriazole alone. Sodium carbonate removes cuprous chloride while at the same time neutralizing the acid in pits, facilitating subsequent stabilization with benzotriazole. Caution should be exercised during treatment to avoid unwanted reactions. Further study is needed to understand the role of certain by-products of the treatment.
