Documents and objects of historical importance embody human thinking and activity; consequently, their content must not be falsified. Any work done by the restorer involves the danger of falsification. In order to justify the intervention, the restorer must provide a reason for each step he has taken. In every case he must substantiate the need for the conservation treatment, or explain why he deems restoration inevitable and justifiable.
