Abstract
Presents a study of the cleaning of the granite facade of an 18th-century church in northern Portugal. The characteristics of the stone and of the black film that covered it were first studied and a number of cleaning methods were tried in the laboratory. The method selected is presented here. A very dilute solution of hydrofluoric acid was used. Its effects on the granite surface are studied. A judicious application of this process gave good results, with minimal or even no damage to stone.
