Abstract
In order to learn the basic principles of lacquering which she could apply in her conservation work at the National Museum of Denmark, the author spent a year as an apprentice in the workshop of a Japanese master lacquerer. The two phases of the lacquering process (the grounding of the basic shape with specific spatulas and the coating), the physical organization of the workshop with its humidity chamber, and a standard treatment process in the Japanese tradition are all described in detail.
