This note examines foxing of a buff-colored board. Mold growth on an underlying mount has caused spot bleaching that subsequently darkens when exposed to light. It is postulated that foxing is the result of mold interacting with iron in the substrate. In the presence of light these iron compounds convert to darker colored forms. For the paper conservator this case history may point to an interaction of mold, iron and light in the production of foxing marks.
