This is an illustrated instruction manual for teachers and students. The first marbling method described uses watercolors. A divided zinc trough, four combs with variously spaced teeth, enamelled cups for holding watercolors mixed with ox-gall or veining liquid ( spirit of soap and water ), hog bristle and rice straw brushes, Carragheen ( Carrageen ) moss size ( 1 oz. to three quarts water ) and alum water are all required. Sponge alum onto paper and skim size in trough to remove skin. The first color applied must spread five inches in order for size consistence to be correct. Apply color with brushes and draw comb through these from front to back and then left to right. Lay paper alum side down onto the colors, lift, rinse and leave to dry. The other methods use oil colors thinned with paraffin or turpentine and waterproof colored inks. Procedures follow closely those described except that ordinary size is used to float the oil colors and water to float the inks. Paper is not prepared with alum.
