Three factors to be considered in the study of rock weathering due to the freeze-thaw cycle are the stone type, the freezing conditions, and the water sources. To preserve stone at least one of these factors must be altered. The Fugoppe Cave, Hokkaido, Japan, is a case study of frost damage to a cave site once the site had been opened. Environmental control was the selected method for protecting the rock carvings in this cave.
