Any trace of man's presence in the landscape, whether in the form of archaeological ruins, hedges or woods, is part of that heritage defined as historic landscape. The management of such sites should follow a strict programme. The heritage must be identified, analyzed and classified in one of four categories (according to its importance to the nation, the county or the locality, or as a destroyed site). Then the dossier must be presented in such a way as to interest the owner or his agent, who are usually concerned primarily with its exploitation. Finally it must be registered with the administration that takes care of the management of that type of property.
