Abstract
The leaded bronze sword hilt exhibits a puzzling mixture of stylistic features, and therefore attempts were made to adduce further evidence from lead-isotope ratio analysis. It was excavated in 1977 from the Serçe Liman wreck site in a small natural harbor on the south coast of Turkey, dated to ca. AD 1025. The overall morphology suggests that the hilt was produced in the west, while the style of decoration appears to be derived from India. Elemental analysis (method not given) gave: Arsenic, 0.12%; Zinc, 2. 8%; Lead, 16.45%; Cobalt, 0.02%; Nickel, 0.11%. Lead-isotope ratios for a number of artifacts from the wreck match closely samples from the Anguran mines near Takht-i-Suleiman (northwest of Teheran) and from a mine near the coast of the Black Sea. The lead of the sword hilt may therefore have originated from either northern Iran or northern Turkey, though it could have been made by an Indian artisan, or one familiar with Indian motifs. A final section discusses what is known of trade routes in the Indian Ocean, and speculates about alternative provenances. -- AATA
