Abstract
The Cyprus collection of the University Museum (Pennsylvania, USA) includes more than 200 copper-based objects from the early Cypriot through middle Cypriot bronze age cemetery of Lapithos. 31 of these artifacts were sampled in order to determine how and of what they were made. Optical and scanning electron microscopy and qualitative microprobe analysis indicated that most of the tools and weapons were cold-worked unalloyed copper, while the toggle pins appeared to be cast bronze. The conclusions were that tin bronze was adopted for the production of shapes that could be easily cast, and arsenical copper alloy for complicated objects roughly cast and then reshaped by hammer.
