Abstract
The Iron Bridge at Shropshire was beset by problems almost as soon as it opened for traffic on January 1, 1781. Hume gives a short history of its problems and repairs, and then describes the Department of the Environment's rescue problem, the final steps of which were repair of ironwork and repainting with five different (type, thickness, color) paints.
