Abstract
A set of criteria with which a museum director can plan the conservation effort and choose the professional conservation staff is proposed. First, the director must be aware of conservation in general and then determine the museum needs for conservation. Some further considerations are as follows: responsibilities, head conservator, research laboratories, supporting services, regional centers, private work, teaching, finances, professional staff, the search and the interview.
