Abstract
This is the first English edition of the French volume, also published in 1791. Second French edition (1804) was co-authored by A. B. Berthollet, Claude Louis' son, and translated by Andrew Ure (1824 and 1841 English editions). Edelstein regards this and Berthollet's 1790 <i>Essay on the New Method of Bleaching, by Means of Oxygenated Muriatic Acid</i> as two of the 13 key books in the history of dyeing and bleaching published before 1856.
