Abstract
Chinese furniture, expecially that of the Ming (AD 1368-1644) and Qing (AD 1644-1912) dynasties, has been the subject of considerable scholarship. Previous work, however, has relied upon wood identification based upon gross features, such as color, grain, and odor. Microanalysis of anatomical characters allows much more accurate identification. This pilot study of hardwood furniture from the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) uses modern techniques, including computerized identification programs, to analyze woods used to construct Chinese furniture.
