An overview of the characteristics and nature of archaeological wood. Dry archaeological wood, if kept dry, can be remarkably stable. Aging characteristics are discussed. Waterlogged wood survives under conditions unsuitable for decay fungi or wood-destroying insects, but is subject to chemical and bacterial attack. The special problems encountered in drying deteriorated, waterlogged wood and suitable treatment methods are discussed.
