The history and condition of this panel painting from Hans Leonhard Schäufelein's workshop is detailed. Due to dry storage conditions, it has been treated several times since 1969. In 1982, scientific examination revealed humidity-related damage to the support (the so-called washboard effect) resulting from the use of different kinds of wood and flat wood inlay. The canvas, originally glued to the wood, was coming off and the ground had begun to disintegrate. Other deterioration could be traced to previous restorations. The restoration measures selected were: consolidation of the ground and the paint layers with adhesive and gluing them temporarily to the original support; transferring the painting to a new support; removing all retouching and overpainting, the convex bulging and the synthetic resin varnish were allowed to remain. In practice, the canvas came off easily from the rotten and worm-infested wood support. The original ground had to be cleaned of fungal growth. Two-thirds of the painting were left and the whole surface was marred by voids; it was retouched using the color selection method.
