Only in exceptional cases is the original surface of medieval furniture intact. During the restoration of the Wartburg Foundation's Dürer cabinet several two-tier late Gothic cabinets from the southern German area were examined carefully and the original appearance of this type of furniture was researched. The chief objectives were to determine the treatment of the wood surface and its coatings. Contemporary literature devoted to such problems has been evaluated. Analyses of the original colors are given.
