A description of a commode and two small corner cabinets from the Schloßmuseum Gotha is followed by a comparison of their construction, veneer, marquetry technique, and their surfaces. Quotations from contemporary sources, chemical analyses and attempts at reconstruction are used to substantiate the supposed working procedure of the Roentgen factory. The colors of the marquetry and of the ground veneer have altered. Originally, the marquetry was dyed with indigo in three shades of blue, whereas the ground veneer was silver-grey with iron vitriol stain. In the reconstruction, the veneers were rapidly stained using steam pressure and vacuum. The original surface finish of Roentgen furniture cannot be completely explained. To preserve the cool coloring of the marquetry and of the ground veneer, the surface of the furniture has been sealed with rabbit bladder glue. As copal was presumably a component of the Roentgen lacquer, the furniture was covered with a thin polish of extra light shellac and copal.
