Until recently, it was believed that the manufacture of firearms in the Netherlands during the 17th-18th centuries did not reach the level of that in other countries although little factual evidence exists to support this. A study of other weapons and armor is being carried out although the number of original, well-documented objects is extremely small. The armor of Karel van Gelre (1538) bears three marks of different masters, although the maker is known. It shows both Netherlandish characteristics and Italian influences. The armor of a pikeman and the cuirass of a 17th-century soldier on horseback are discussed in detail. The cuirass of de Ruyter appears to have been worn.
