The folk museum has as much air-conditioning as the weather allows. The influence on the objects of both climate and people is considerably larger than in regular museums. The museum was founded in 1912. The collection consists of tools and objects used in agriculture, trade, and crafts, from the 17th century to the present. The area of the museum covers 44 hectares, in a surrounding of mainly beech trees, on the northern slope of a hill. There are more than 50 buildings from all over the country, including rebuilt mills, workshops, and farms. They are all subject to the same unfavorable climatic conditions, little ventilation and much humidity. A large part of the collection is not exhibited, but stored in depots, mostly in the attics of the museum buildings, but also in various buildings outside Arnhem, all of which were not designed for storage. Many problems of exhibition also exist: the museum is closed in winter, gas stoves are placed in a number a buildings, lack of personnel, etc. Modern materials used to fight rainwater and humidity include plastic foil and Ruberoid, applied invisibly in roofs, under the ancient but leaking tiles. Measures taken include: fencing, use of a conveyor belt as a carpet, use of a copy of a historic fritter booth (instead of the original). The specific problems of the Arnhem experience demonstrate the dilemma between conservation and exhibition in an open-air museum.
