Abstract
The collection of the Dutch Textile Museum in Tilburg contains many different kinds of objects: tools, machinery, various small objects (such as lace bobbins, needles, and tape measures) and books, documents, and photographic records. Products of the textile industry are also collected along with modern textile art objects. The museum has at its disposition a former textile factory, the Mommers complex, one of more than 20 factories that have existed in Tilburg. The 100-year-old buildings have plenty of daylight but hardly any air conditioning, so many adjustments have to be made. The most vulnerable objects are kept in wooden boxes, wrapped in acid-free paper. For graphic art and some paintings, a special cabinet has been built for the exclusion of dust and light. Textiles have been laid is metal drawers, placed in a vault for better stability. In the library, the daylight is excluded for the most part. The objects which are acquired are generally in bad condition. They are cleaned and restored to functional condition. Historic wear and tear is conserved as much as possible. The major task of the museum will be the transfer of knowledge of ancient textile technology to the younger generation. The transformation of the old factory to a museum will be done with the assistance of two architects, the monument departments of the state and the city of Tilburg, the museum board, and an expert in museum design. The demands made on the climatic condition of the building have been established and building plans include insulation of the roofs, double glazing of all windows, elimination of ultraviolet light and reduction of visible light levels. The choice has been made for rather wide ranges of relative humidity, and a gradual temperature change of only 1.5°C per hour. The conditions to be set depend on the different types of building and the intended usage. As much as possible, the building's characteristic details are maintained. Parts to be removed or changed are photographed in detail.
